Participation in mentoring is integral for advancement within sport organizations, particularly for women (Bower, 2009; Shaw, 2006). However, it is unclear how mentoring contributes to opportunities for career advancement or breakthroughs (e.g., opportunities for new functional roles, project oversight) (Mainiero, 1994).Despite the significant progress in female sports since the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, athletic spaces remain largely sexist environ-ments whereby female athletes are subjugated by institutional systems rooted in patriarchy (Corbett & Johnson, 2000; Flowers, 2015; Tryce & Brooks, 2010).Sep 8, 2020 · Academic and athletic identities are related to performance and wellbeing indicators in both the educational and sport domains, respectively. This paper presents a systematic literature review examining empirical research into the academic and athletic identities of student-athletes in dual (education and sport) careers.
